Mindfulness

Mindfulness is in the news, but like many things it’s not new!  It owes its origins to Buddhism and has been practiced for 2,500 years.

So what is Mindfulness?  Put simply, it involves paying attention on purpose, or being “in the moment.”  More generally, it involves living in the present and not dwelling on the past. Equally, we have little or no control over events in the future so all we have is NOW and the next now, which is about to arrive, well Now!

So how can mindfulness help?  Mindfulness can help with:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • lack of confidence
  • weight loss, if depression is the cause
  • addiction

For example, people who suffer from depression tend to dwell on the past.  They look inwards, rather than outwards towards the world.  Equally, they tend to make negative assumptions about things that happen to them, when in fact those things are not negative at all.  We are all a bit like this at times.  We jump to the wrong conclusions and “do ourselves down” for no good reason.

Mindfulness training helps us to get in touch with our true feelings, in a non-judgmental way.  So it enables us to see things as they really are and to manage our way through life’s challenges much more easily.  A big part of this is living for the NOW and gaining pleasure from small things, the small things we see and experience every day.

You could choose to buy one of the excellent Mindfulness books that are now available and work through it on your own, or you could attend a group based mindfulness course.  But, if you feel you need one-to-one mindfulness coaching we can help.  There are many benefits to this approach not least of which is the rapid progress that can be made when working on a one-to-one basis.  Together we will work through your background and what’s troubling you.  Based in this understanding we will move forward using mindfulness techniques and exercises.  Your attention will shift towards the NOW and the next now and the one after that.  This will help you acknowledge the past while focusing on the present. You will be more fully engaged on the Now and worry less about things over which you have no control.
